For a number of years, the North Dakota Department of Agriculture interpreted the law allowing raw milk sales to mean it was limited to fluid raw milk only. No cream, chocolate milk etc. This put pressure on producers to limit what foods families could access from their local dairy.

Thanks to the effort put forward by representative Dawson Holle of Mandan, a bill was introduced in early 2025 that expanded the wording of ND law to specifically allow all forms of raw milk products to be sold direct from the farmer to the end consumer.

On August 15, a “Red Tape Cutting Celebration” was held on the steps of the North Dakota State Capitol building in Bismarck to celebrate HB1131 passing into law and becoming effective August 1st. Peter Bartlett, as well as other producers and legislator Dawson Holle, who sponsored the bill, were present to cut the red tape on raw milk products — expanding the ability for families in the state to access nourishing raw dairy products for their families.

Thanks to the support of raw milk consumers, North Dakota is now at the leading edge of raw dairy laws, allowing families easier access to raw dairy products that help raise a healthier generation of kids.
